PENETRON Renews Old Floors for Google

Before Google could move into a new retail space in the Atlanta’s Ponce City Market, PENETRON Specialty Products (PSP) needed to help restore the worn-out concrete floors within a very tight schedule. Thanks to the ease-of-use of the fast-setting RENEW WS floor overlayment, the move proceeded smoothly and on-time for a summer 2016 opening.

The interior floor at Google Fiber shows off the highly polished RENEW WS.

Shining result: The interior floor at Google Fiber shows off the highly polished RENEW WS.

Atlanta is already the site of Google’s southeast sales hub. The internet services company currently has data centers in downtown Atlanta and Lithia Springs. The additional office space at the Ponce City Market was added as a new Atlanta retail outlet, part of the company’s plans to roll out “Google Fiber,” an ultra-high speed broadband service (1,000 megabits per second). This service will provide fast downloads, instant response internet access and a peerless HDTV viewing experience with 150+ channels and tens of thousands of shows and movies on demand.

A $200 million mixed-use redevelopment – with extensive restoration of the concrete flooring structures with RENEW WS – has transformed Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward district. Today, it is the preferred destination for a number of high-profile, high-tech companies, including Twitter, MailChimp, Howstuffworks and athenahealth.

RESTORING WORN-OUT CONCRETE

Baker Paint and Flooring, the installing contractor, began preparation of the 8,000 square feet area in the Google store by shot-blasting the existing concrete floor, followed by the installation of a primer system consisting of epoxy with sand broadcast. Once fully cured, the RENEW WS, a quick-setting, self-leveling topping from PSP, was applied as a restorative wear surface over the worn-out concrete in a 3/8"-thick overlayment.

The RENEW WS overlayment worked perfectly. The PSP system is dimensionally stable and helped eliminate the common surface imperfections associated with a polished topping.

BRILLIANT AND MAINTENANCE-FREE SURFACE

The remaining grinding, staining and burnishing process resulted in a brilliant, diamond-polished concrete floor, ready for the coming retail foot traffic this summer.

This sort of problem-solving for flooring projects is a PSP strength. Both the customer and architect are very pleased with the virtually maintenance-free finish.
